Abstract
The National Policy for Women and Gender Equality lays down strategies on (I) the development of legal, policy and institutional frameworks with a gender inclusive and sensitive approach to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men in all spheres and structures of government as well as in the workplace, the community and the family; and (II) gender mainstreaming in national strategies and programmes for women's empowerment and equal participation. Priority action areas are set out as gender-based violence; women's nutrition, health and hygiene; disease prevention; education and training; cultural norms and traditions; women's economic empowerment through improved access to productive resources, marketing skills and extension services, especially for women in agriculture and fisheries; employment opportunities; women’s participation in decision-making processes; increased agricultural production to protect food security; and protection of environment.
