Abstract
This Act provides for the promotion and protection of breast-feeding and for the marketing and promotion of designated products including breast milk substitutes in order to ensure safe and adequate nutrition for infants and young children.
The Act provides for the establishment of the Punjab Infant Feeding Board and defines its composition and powers and functions.
The Act prohibits the promotion of breast milk substitutes except as provided for under this Ordinance; provides guidance relating to labels of breast milk substitutes and for the dissemination of informational and educational material; prohibits the manufacture, sale or otherwise distribution of breast milk substitutes in the Punjab unless formulated industrially in accordance with the standards recommended by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the Codex Code of Hygienic Practice for Foods for Infants and Children; and provides for penalties.
