Abstract
The Act aims to regulate and deter speculation in essential commodities to ensure fair pricing and availability for consumers in Punjab. The Act empowers authorized officers to conduct inquiries, investigations, and trials under the Act, with the ability to seek assistance from statutory bodies if needed. The Act defines essential commodities such as sugar, wheat, vegetable ghee, cooking/edible oil, and rice and imposes penalties for various offences, including being found in a common house with essential commodities for speculation, engaging in speculation in essential commodities, and aiding and abetting such activities. The Act also allows for the sale of seized essential commodities by authorized officers. Additionally, the Act grants the government the power to make rules for its implementation and has an override effect over other laws. The Act emphasizes the importance of providing information and declarations related to essential commodities and registration of delivery orders. The Act consists of 18 Articles.
