Abstract
This Policy of the Province of Sindh sets out the vision, principles, goals and objectives for providing safe and reliable supply of drinking water to the population. Specific objectives of the Policy include, among others: Introduce regulatory (legislative) measures for the abstraction, transport, distribution and control of drinking water; Ensure all drinking water sources and supply are managed with community involvement; Develop district drinking water availability plans to ensure improved planning for equitable access; develop new schemes; Develop standardized service delivery models; Develop mechanisms for reuse and recycling of water; Develop monitoring and surveillance and establish mechanisms for remedial action; Institutionalize WASH in schools; Minimize impact of climatic events on drinking water supply systems. Key issues for safe drinking water supply are: water availability and quantity; sector inefficiency; poor monitoring and lack of coordination; poor consultation with communities; unregulated urban and rural development; urbanization (Karachi). The Policy contains a Chapter on health, nutrition and hygiene. essential nutrition actions shall be integrated with WASH programs.
