Abstract
The Decree-Law approves the Statute protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications of the Douro Demarcated Region. In particular, this statute regulates and recognizes the protected designation of origin (PDO) "Porto", including the designations "vinho do Porto", "vin de Porto", "Port wine", "Port", and their equivalents in other languages, and "Douro", as well as the protected geographical indication (PGI) "Duriense" and the PGI "Douro" for wine brandy, which may only be used for wines and wine products produced in the Douro Demarcated Region (RDD), which tradition has established with that name and which comply with the provisions of this statute and other applicable legislation. The PDO "Porto" may be used for fortified wine to be included in the liqueur wine category and for other wine products from the RDD, under terms to be regulated by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto, I. P. (IVDP, I. P.), after consultation with the interprofessional council. Finally, it establishes that the RDD PDO and PGI may only be used in wine sector products that, cumulatively, comply with applicable wine regulations, comply with applicable production and trade rules and have been certified by the IVDP.
