Decree-Law No. 140/99 reviewing the transposition of Council Directive No. 79/409/EEC of 2 April on the conservation of wild birds, and Council Directive No. 92/43/EEC of 21 May on the conservation of natural habitats and fauna and wild flora.

This Decree-Law, consisting of 27 articles and completed by three Annexes (ABC), reviews the transposition of Council Directive No. 79/409/EEC of 2 April on the conservation of wild birds, and Council Directive No. 92/43/EEC of 21 May on the conservation of natural habitats and fauna and wild flora. It reviews the transposition into national law of the following Community directives: a) Council Directive 79/409/EEC of 2 April (birds directive), as amended by Commission Directives 91/244/EEC of 6 March, No. 94/24/EC of the Council of 8 June, and No. 97/49/EC of the Commission of 29 June; b) Council Directive No. 92/43/EEC of 21 May (habitats directive), with the amendments introduced by Council Directive No. 97/62/EC of 27 October. Its objectives are to contribute to ensuring biodiversity, through the conservation and restoration of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna in a favourable state of conservation in the national territory, taking into account economic, social and cultural requirements, as well as regional and local peculiarities.
