Decree-Law No. 97/2012 approving the Institute for Douro and Porto Wines (IVDP).

This Decree-Law creates the Institute for Douro and Porto Wines (IVDP), a public body in charge for the wine sector in Porto Region. Moreover, it regulates the internal bodies and functioning. The IVDP, I.P.'s mission is to control the quality and quantity of Port wines, regulating the production process, as well as protecting and defending the "Douro" and "Porto" designations of origin and the "Duriense" geographical indication. The IVDP, I.P. is responsible for: a) Propose the strategic direction and implement the wine policy for the Douro Demarcated Region (RDD), the production and trade structure, including exports; b) Promote production and trade by controlling and supervising the production and marketing of Port, Douro and Duriense wines, ensuring the registration of vineyard plots in this region, the control of the winegrowers; c) Control, promote and defend the RDD's designations of origin and geographical indications, as well as other wine products; d) Investigate administrative offence proceedings; e) Encouraging the adoption of best practices in the field of viticulture and technological development; f) Proposing and implementing a policy for the promotion and export of Douro and Port wines; g) Promote and implement a policy for the treatment of wine by-products, safeguarding the principles of economic and environmental sustainability.
