Abstract
The National Action Plan to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance was drawn up with the aim of managing actions to combat Antimicrobial Resistance, reduce the increase in resistant microbial infections and improve treatment outcomes for patients in Portugal.
The global objectives and proposed strategies of the Plan are: define the global objectives to be achieved, and in the construction of this plan. The strategic lines proposed by the following three Entities are adopted: World Health Organization (WHO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and Organization of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO): 1. Continue the implementation of the UN One Health Approach; 2. Improve knowledge about antimicrobial resistance; 3. Strengthen the knowledge and evidence base through epidemiological surveillance, environmental monitoring, and research; 4. Reduce the incidence of infection; 5. Optimize the use of antimicrobials; 6. Maintain commitment and increase investment in new medicines, diagnostic tools, vaccines and other relevant interventions.
Objective 1: Continue implementation of the One Health Approach, in which human and animal health and the agriculture and food production and environmental sectors work together, is fundamental to containing the increase in of AMR. Objective 2: Improve knowledge about antimicrobial resistance Increase dissemination and improve awareness and understanding among citizens, animal keepers and professionals in the areas of human and veterinary health, agriculture, industry and environment, of the risks of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training, which allow achieving behavioral changes committed to the preservation of the antibiotic. Objective 3: Strengthen the knowledge and evidence base through epidemiological surveillance, environmental monitoring and research. Objective 4: Reduce the incidence of infection. Objective 5: Optimize the use of antimicrobials. Goal 6: Maintain commitment and increase sustained investment in new medicines, diagnostic tools, vaccines and other relevant interventions.
The National Plan to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance (PNCRAM), must be constituted by the Strategic Plan outlined, by the Operational Plan to be developed by the sectors in the areas of human health, animal health and environment, based on the strategy and goals set out, and also by the Monitoring and Evaluation Plan to be developed within the scope of the Working Group’s responsibilities. The elaboration of this global national plan must count, as a principle of comprehensiveness and as a necessary condition for the feasibility of its implementation, with the participation and approval of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Environment and Finance.
