Abstract
The Port Wine Denomination of Origin Regulation, approved by Decree-Law No. 166/86 of 26 June, lists the types of wine and the traditional terms for Port wine, while also allowing the use of other terms under control and in accordance with rules defined by the Port Wine Institute. Article 11 of this Regulation provides for and defines the special designations for Port wine. Paragraph 2 of the same article allows the use, under control and in accordance with the rules defined by the Port Wine Institute, taking into account the characteristics of the wines, of various designations, such as reserve, superior, very old, very old, etc., and their respective translations into other languages. Under this provision, the Port Wine Institute has disciplined and controlled the use of various qualifiers for Port wine. Under Community regulations, specifically Council Regulation (EC) No 1493/1999 of 17 May 1999 on the common organisation of the market in wine, these terms constitute traditional requirements.
