Abstract
This Order creates the Co-management Committee for the octopus (Octopus vulgaris) fishery in the Algarve area, which is governed by its Statute, as set out in Annex I. The rules applicable to the exercise of commercial maritime fishing, the definition of national measures for the conservation of biological resources and the legal regime for the authorization, registration and licensing of vessels used in this activity are laid down in Decree-Law No. 278/87 of 7 July, and Regulatory Decree No. 43/87 of 17 July. The co-management committee for octopus (Octopus vulgaris) fishing manages and monitors octopus fishing carried out exclusively using shelter traps (alcatruzes) and cage traps with a minimum mesh size of 30 mm (covos), within the limits of the area encompassed by the strip of coastline delimited by the Odeceixe stream (west) and the mouth of the Guadiana river (east), which corresponds to the entire length of the Algarve coastline, and the jurisdiction of the Port Authorities of Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, as shown in Annex 2.
The Committee's mission is the preservation of the species and the sustainability of its economic activity, in accordance with the best available scientific knowledge, evaluating scientific data and coordinating the various activities involved under the terms of this Statute.
