Abstract
The scope of this Government Decree is the protection of public health, with a view of prevention of iodine deficiency diseases, by promoting consumption of iodized salt throughout the country. The Ministry of Industries, through the Autonomous Salt Authority, as the only authorized producer, will ensure the necessary production of iodized salt for human consumption throughout the country. The potassium iodate used for iodization of salt must comply with the purity conditions provided for in the Romanian Pharmacopoeia in force. For the prevention of iodine deficiency diseases, iodized salt used for human consumption must contain a minimum of 40 mg and a maximum of 50 mg of potassium iodate per kg of salt. Iodized salt will be packaged in boxes or bags up to 1 kg, which will bear the logo of the Autonomous Salt Authority. For collective consumption, packaging in polyethylene bags of up to 50 kg is permitted. The shelf life for iodized salt is 6 months from the date of iodization. Non-iodized salt will be used for the food industry and for food preservation.
