Regional Law No. 140-OZ “On some issues of organizing and ensuring protection of original habitat and traditional way of life of small-numbered indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation living on the regional territory.

This Regional Law regulated social relations concerning organizing and ensuring protection of original habitat and traditional way of life of small-numbered indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation permanently living on the regional territory in places of traditional living and traditional economic activities thereof performing traditional economic activities and customary practices. It shall also be applicable to indigenous peoples for whom traditional economic activities and customary practices are subsidiary in relation to their main activities. Regional authorities shall ensure protection of traditional habitat and traditional way of life of small-numbered indigenous peoples for the following purposes: (a) protection of traditional habitat, traditional way of life and traditional economic activities and customary practices related thereto; (b) ensuring sustainable socio-economic and cultural development of small-numbered indigenous peoples; and (c) conservation and development of the original culture of small-numbered indigenous peoples.
