Abstract
This Updated Nationally Determined Contribution, following the intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) of September 2015, represents Seychelles continued commitment to transform its development goals in line to the objectives of the Paris Agreement, aiming at limiting greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, through interventions in the energy, transport and waste sector, and performing adaptation impacts in terms of the Blue Economy in the areas of water, coastal management, food security, human impacts, with a special focus dedicated to ocean climate action and blue carbon as nature-based solutions to climate change. The Contribution focuses on mitigation and adaptation measures and defines cross-cutting areas for action. Mitigation contributions include: commitment to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within 2030; long-term commitment to achieve a decarbonised net-zero emissions economy by 2050 and to boost electricity generation from renewable energy sources, including marine energy technologies, bioenergy, such as biomass and waste-to-energy; modernising the entire electricity sector, increasing electricity generation from renewable sources, and securing a sustainable and resilient water management system through water supply mobilisation; improvement of sewage systems and wastewater treatment facilities.
Concerning adaptation measures, the Contribution focuses on: coastal planning and management, in order to implement the blue nature-based solutions and protect the coastal ecosystem from flooding, erosion and other extreme events; protection of the country’s seagrass and mangrove ecosystem, with a long-term monitoring programme; implementation of the adopted Marine Spatial Plan and effective management of marine protected areas within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ); implementation of coordinated initiatives to develop core sectors for the country’s economy, such as: fisheries and aquaculture, agriculture, waste management, water resources, biodiversity conservation and urban development; development of a Port Master Plan; improving management of freshwater resources, with new strategies to reuse water; ensuring sustainable use of fisheries, in order to avoid overexploitation; implementation of the National Integrated Emergency Management Plan; promotion of climate smart agriculture initiatives, including water efficient irrigation, rainwater harvesting and expansion of climate adapted crops and livestock; strengthening sustainable land-use planning; integration of climate adaptation into food security strategies; improvement of early warning system and disaster risk management.
