Abstract
This Act governs Sweden's activities and obligations concerning Antarctica, in alignment with international agreements and protocols related to the continent. It includes provisions on the management of Swedish activities in Antarctica, ensuring compliance with the Antarctic Treaty System and related agreements, and addressing environmental protection and scientific research in the region. The Act aims to uphold Sweden’s commitments to the peaceful and cooperative use of Antarctica, while also addressing national responsibilities and regulations related to activities on the continent. It is prohibited to stay in or conduct activities in Antarctica without a permit according to this Act. Whoever stays in or conducts activities in Antarctica must take the necessary measures to prevent waste from being generated and left in Antarctica, and otherwise protect and preserve the environment in Antarctica. Moreover, it is prohibited to: a) Explore, collect, investigate, extract, or process mineral resources and meteorites; b) Collect or harm any plant or animal species that naturally occurs in Antarctica; c) Introduce plant or animal species that do not naturally occur in Antarctica onto land, ice shelves, or into the water; and d) Visit specially protected areas. Moreover, Iin the sea in Antarctica, it is prohibited to discharge from a vessel: a) oils or oil-containing mixtures; b) other harmful liquid substances, chemicals, or other substances in quantities or concentrations that are harmful to the marine environment; c) untreated sewage; and d) solid waste.
