Abstract
This Addendum to Singapore's Long-Term Low-Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS), submitted in 2022 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, updates the nation's climate goals by setting a clear target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This strengthens the previous goal outlined in the 2020 LEDS, which aimed to halve emissions by 2050, contingent on technological advancements and international cooperation. Key strategies for achieving this target include: 1. Business Transformation: Encouraging industries, particularly the energy and chemicals sectors, to adopt sustainable practices and improve energy efficiency; 2. Investment in Low-Carbon Technologies: Focusing on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), along with low-carbon fuels and renewable energy solutions like solar power; 3. International Cooperation: Leveraging international carbon markets, collaborating on regional power grids, and engaging in global climate action; 4. Promoting Low-Carbon Lifestyles: Encouraging public transportation, electric vehicles, and greener commuting practices. This strategy is backed by a revised carbon tax, incentivizing businesses to reduce emissions and adopt cleaner technologies. Achieving the targets will depend on global climate collaboration, as Singapore is highly committed to fulfilling its obligations under the Paris Agreement.
