Plant Varieties Protection Act.

This Act provides for the protection of plant varieties and it shall apply only to the plant genera and species listed in the Schedule. The Act consists of 11 Parts divided into 54 sections.
The Minister shall appoint a Registrar and shall establish a Registry of Plant Varieties where Registration shall take place (Part II). An application for a grant of protection for a plant variety shall be made by the breeder of that plant variety to the Registrar as provided for in Part III. Conditions for the grant or revocation of protection for a plant variety are set out in Part IV. Without the authorization of the grantee, it shall be prohibited to undertake any of the following acts in respect to the plant variety: production and reproduction; sale; export; import, etc. (Part V). Part VI provides for compulsory licences to be granted in order to exploit a protected variety in Singapore. Part VII deals with matters related to notice of protection and Part VIII provides for the registration of denomination of a plant variety, which shall be approved by the Registrar and registered at the time the grant of protection is made. The Registrar shall maintain a register of plant varieties, which shall be available at the Registry for inspection by any person (Part IX). The remaining Parts contain offences and provisions of miscellaneous nature.
