Coal Exit Strategy 2022.

The Slovenian Coal Exit Strategy January 2022 (National strategy for exiting coal and restructuring coal regions in accordance with the principles of a just transition) has the purpose to make some key mid-term decisions that will enable the most affected regions to undergo a gradual and fair process of long-term energy, environmental, economic and social restructuring upon exit from coal use, namely: 1. definition of coal regions and determination of the year of exit from coal; 2. definition of the coal exit process by determining the scenario for comprehensive social and economic restructuring of the coal regions of SAŠA and Zasavje in accordance with the principles of a just transition; 3. identification of relevant resources at the national and EU level and the way of managing the just transition process; 4. definition of the key aspects of PV closure from the point of view of the impact on employees and the community and from the point of view of protecting and preserving the environment; 5. creating synergies in the implementation of a just transition between the two regions, through joint projects, transfer of good practices and experiences. The strategy is based on a detailed analysis of the key challenges and opportunities of both regions. The strategy also provides a long-term view of the development of the two coal regions and focuses on defining their strategic and operational goals for social and economic restructuring. Among the points of departure, it takes into account the importance of coal mining in the Slovenian energy industry, especially the role of TEŠ in the Slovenian electricity system, but its purpose is not to propose solutions for a reliable and price competitive supply of electricity in Slovenia after the termination of operation of TEŠ coal units.
