Regulation on recognition of professional veterinarians.

This Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, which is composed of 25 articles and two Annexes, lays down substantive requirements for the recognition of professional qualifications of veterinarians who have obtained the name of the veterinarian in the country of the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland. Qualifications of veterinarians are recognized as proper ones to practice veterinary medicine in the Republic of Slovenia or perform occasional veterinary services in the Republic of Slovenia, for veterinarians who are nationals of EU Member States, European Economic Area or Switzerland, and in these countries acquired their professional qualifications as well as third country nationals who have acquired professional qualifications in a Member State.
The Regulation details specific educational standards, requiring that qualifying professional training spans a minimum of five years of full-time theoretical and practical study. This curriculum must thoroughly cover fundamental veterinary sciences, animal health, husbandry, disease prevention, clinical diagnostics, food hygiene, and the safe, responsible administration of veterinary medicinal products. For qualifications matching designated EU criteria, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food applies the principle of automatic recognition, ensuring smooth integration into the domestic labor market for practitioners coming from member states, while also establishing pathways for historical diplomas or alternative educational formats obtained prior to specific reference dates.
Furthermore, the Regulation institutes a transparent procedural framework for verifying credentials, outlining required documentation—such as proofs of formal qualifications, certificates of good standing, and declarations of unblemished professional conduct. It also governs the rules for cross-border temporary service providers and lays down rigorous evaluation mechanisms for applicants holding qualifications from third countries who have not yet had their credentials recognized elsewhere in the European Union.
