Abstract
This Cashew Policy Implementation Plan provides for a strategic framework for the sustainable development of the cashew value chain in Sierra Leone, offers an analysis of the cashew sector and presents the opportunities offered by the value chain for the population of Sierra Leone, in order to address challenges and overcome issues. The vision of this Implementation Plan is to increase cashew value chain and market, in order to improve socio-economic growth and development through commercial agriculture. The Implementation Plan presents focuses on the following thematic fields: cashew production; improved planting materials; farm management practice; climate smart agriculture; pest and disease management; trade and commercialisation.
The objectives of the Plan, the related actions and targeted activities concern: ensuring the practice of a sustainable and competitive cashew production; improving the quality of seeds and planting materials; providing farmers with adequate training services on general cashew production management; promotion of intercropping cashew with other crops and beekeeping to diversify production; successful control and management of pest and diseases affecting cashew; promotion of agricultural research activities, in order to improve all climate sensitive agricultural practices; promotion of standards codes, quality control and certification; empowerment of farmer groups with the necessary capacities to represent the interests of cashew farmers; improvement of women role in cashew value chain.
