Abstract
This Sierra Leone Seed Roadmap for Rice, Cassava, Maize and Soybean recognises that building a strong seed system is an anchor that will propel Sierra Leone’s agriculture’s development, creating jobs and wealth, particularly in rural areas. The Roadmap is based on the role of Research Institutes, Governmental Agencies and the Federation of Farmers of Sierra Leone to attract investment that allow the country to achieve food and nutritional security as well as food sovereignty. The main goal of the Roadmap is supporting the realisation of an agricultural revolution for Sierra Leone through the establishment of an economically sustainable seed system for its priority crops—rice, cassava, maize and soybean. Targeted objectives include: developing a seed system road map for Sierra Leone; raising awareness on the role of quality seeds in agricultural transformation; sharing best practices in building sustainable rice, cassava, maize, and soybean seed systems; advocating for more investments in sustainable rice, cassava, maize, and soybean seed systems for economic prosperity, including job creation and gaining access to affordable foods. Particularly, the main components of the soybean seed production action plan include: capacity building; poultry production; strengthening institutions; exchange of knowledge.
