Abstract
This Ordinance concerns all vertebrates and invertebrates (including non-edible fish) including nests, eggs, egg-shells and plumage and trophies and applies to the Colony of Sierra Leone and Protectorate. The Ordinance empowers the Governor in Council to make regulations concerning: the prohibition of the hunting and destruction of the animals mentioned in the attached schedules; the protection and preservation of reserves and of the animals therein; the establishment of reserves, where hunting, capturing or killing any specified wild animals or birds is unlawful, without the special permission of the Governor; the establishment of close seasons; issuance of licences and permits; methods by which wild animals may be hunted or destroyed; the imposition of export duties on any trophy; the prohibition of hunting or killing young elephants; the application of measures for preventing the transmission of contagious diseases from domestic to wild animals; the application of measures for effecting the sufficient reduction of the numbers of the animals of the species mentioned in the attached schedules; the destruction of the eggs of crocodiles, poisonous snakes and pythons. The Ordinance provides for: restrictions on the import and export of trophies and on the export of wild animals; collection of specimens of animals, for museums or zoological gardens, or for any other scientific purpose; prohibition of hunting by motor vehicle or aircraft; penalties and rewards to informers; permit to capture or kill any animal or bird injuring, or about to injure, crops, cattle, a house, or other property.
