Abstract
This law sets out the framework on seeds with a view to protecting and conserving biodiversity. The aim is to reduce and eradicate genetic erosion so as to preserve plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. The law outlines specific measures from an integrated approach which involves conservation, research and sustainable use of plant genetic resources. Title II regulates genetic improvement and seed production. The cultivation of transgenic varieties is prohibited (art. 6, paragraph 2). Title III regulates breeders’ rights and gives special protection to traditional and local knowledge in this field. Article 10 lays down specific provisions on labelling. Title IV regulates intellectual property rights.
