Abstract
This document outlines the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The strategy establishes specific plans to achieve the three main objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity, namely: the conservation of biological diversity; the sustainable use of the biological diversity components; the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies.
Considering the main goal of the Convention, that is to halt or even to invert the loss of biodiversity which is going on globally, the following primary objectives have been devised in the NBSAP: a) guarantee a legally binding protection for biodiversity; b) use natural resources and ecosystems in a sustainable way in order to preserve biodiversity; c) increase the knowledge of the biological diversity heritage of the territory; d) promote a broad and easily accessible knowledge of biodiversity.
Priority areas are identified for the second objective (use natural resources and ecosystems in a sustainable way in order to preserve biodiversity): to guarantee a sustainable urban development by managing the use of soil to have the smallest possible impact on biodiversity; to restore aquatic environments by guaranteeing a sufficient qualitative profile to sustain a multitude of organisms. The latter includes actions such as: improve the sewers system to reduce the organic pollution of the fresh water environments; guarantee a continuity of streams and rivers through the construction of fish ladders or by demolishing or renovating the dams using the most advanced environmental engineering practices.
The following priority areas correspond to the fourth objective (promote a broad and easily accessible knowledge of biodiversity): to promote an effective education on the concept of biodiversity in schools; to enhance ecotourism to promote the biodiversity heritage of San Marino; to create a platform to enhance the Clearing-House Mechanism and to promote the free flow of information between the research bodies and the population.
