Abstract
National Drought Plan for Somalia (2020) aims to set a system and mechanism in place whereby Government of Somalia and relevant stakeholders can operate in order to mitigate the broad array and frequent impact of droughts in Somalia to enable the establishment of a resilient society that can withstand the drought shocks. The priority strategic interventions of the Plan are: 1) Drought Monitoring and Prediction; 2) Drought Impact assessment: 3) Drought Preparedness through sustainable use of Water, Landand Natural resources; 4) Improving Emergency Drought Response.
The Actions and objectives envisaged by the Plan are: Improved Drought Governance system for effective drought management through number of drought related policy and contingency plans developed at federal and state levels; enhanced drought monitoring and early warning system capacity of the country through establishment of early warning centres, drought information produced; Improved adaptive and resilience capacity of agro-pastoral communities to drought thanks to agro-pastoral committees practicing sustainable farming methods that are adaptive to drought risks (e.g Sustainable grazing method, growing drought tolerant seeds); preparedness mechanism improved through establishment of number of strategic water reserves, food reserve banks, etc; etc.
