Abstract
The Social Mobilisation, Advocacy and Communication (SMAC) Strategy for Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) in Somalia aims to improve nutrition through a coordinated, government-led approach to multisector social mobilisation, advocacy and communication efforts to scale up nutrition in Somalia. The Strategy seeks to improve maternal and child nutrition in Somalia, with focus on reduction of maternal infant and young child under-nutrition and child stunting. This will be achieved by up scaling both essential nutrition specific as well as nutrition-sensitive interventions.
SMAC Strategic Goal 1: SUN mobilises and engages stakeholders from different sectors in Somalia. Strategic objectives under this Goal are: Different stakeholders in Somalia are sensitised and involved in SUN activities; A strong multi-sectoral support in scaling up nutrition with active involvement of leading public and private institutions; There is good political will, momentum and commitment for scaling up nutrition in Somalia; Mass and traditional media create awareness, influence decision-making processes and accountability on the importance of the first 1000 days of life. SMAC Strategic Goal 2: Nutrition policy framework supports integration of nutrition specific and nutrition-sensitive programmes. Strategic objectives under this Goal are: There is increased awareness on nutrition policies, legislations and strategies in Somalia; SUN influences the development and review of policies, legislations and strategies to promote the integration of nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programmes; Nutrition actors advocate for enforcement of nutrition policies, legislations and guidelines. SMAC Strategic Goal 3: Strong coordination of nutrition, humanitarian and emergency programmes in Somalia. Strategic objectives under this Goal are: Nutrition stakeholders align programmes to national policies and priorities; clear coordination mechanisms among SUN stakeholders; Scaling up nutrition is integrated into emergency responses and humanitarian programmes in Somalia. SMAC Strategic Goal 4: Improved financing of costed nutrition plans in Somalia. Strategic objectives under this Goal are: nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programmes in Somalia are costed in key sectors; Allocations and expenditures for nutrition-specific and nutrition sensitive programmes are tracked and reported by members of SUN Multi-stakeholder Platform; non-traditional donors provide additional resources to nutrition programmes; Government, donors and development partners meet their commitments to finance nutrition.
