Somali National Pesticides Policy May, 2019.

The Somali National Pesticides Policy aims to contribute to increased agricultural productivity, food security, and economic growth by promoting the sustainable access, distribution, and safe use of pesticides across the country. Its primary objective is to establish a coherent and flexible regulatory framework that enables the development of a competitive and efficient pesticide market while safeguarding public health, agricultural workers, consumers, and the environment. By addressing long‑standing regulatory gaps in the importation, trade, use, and handling of pesticides, the policy seeks to reduce health risks, environmental degradation, and economic losses associated with counterfeit, substandard, and inappropriate pesticide use. More specifically, the Policy seeks to create an enabling business environment for responsible pesticide supply chains; strengthen the capacity of suppliers and farmers to adopt safe, profitable, and sustainable pesticide practices; and promote Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and good agricultural practices. It also aims to build regulatory, monitoring, and institutional capacity aligned with regional and international standards, thereby ensuring quality control and compliance with international conventions. Through enhanced research, extension services, and public‑private partnerships, the Policy strives to improve pest and disease management, protect ecosystems, and support resilient agricultural livelihoods in Somalia.
