Abstract
This Act establishes the Suriname Tourism Authority (STA) to define, regulate, organise, and promote the tourism sector at national and regional levels, recognising its importance for the economic development of the country. The Act focuses on the concept of sustainable tourism, as an optimal and responsible use of natural, cultural, social, and financial resources for national development, while aiming to provide a unique experience to visitors and improve quality of life through partnerships between government, private sector, and communities. The Act defines the following duties and tasks of the Surinamese Tourism Authority: developing and implementing measures for sustainable tourism development and sector organisation; increasing tourism products and services through targeted strategies; development of new products, facilities, and opportunities; collecting, analysing, and distributing statistical data relevant to the sector; conducting market research; cooperation with national and international organisations involved in tourism sector; promoting safe business practices and public awareness about tourism's importance; establishing incentive programmes, classification, and certification systems for businesses and professions in tourism. The Act also provides for financial measures and for funding the Authority.
