Abstract
This Decision assigns to the disposal of the Ministry of Natural Resources the administration of the coastal strip between the Coppename River and the Burnside Canal, the boundaries of which are indicated in the appendix and the map attached, in order to ensure its protection against a number of increasing threats, including: obstruction of the freshwater supply from the southern Coronie swamp to the mangrove forests in the north, by the reclamation of area for the purpose of rice cultivation; increasing pollution of the water swamps with agricultural chemicals; economic disadvantages due to the large use of agricultural pesticides. The Decision moves from the consideration that the defined area contains extensive mangrove forests and has great importance for coastal and sea fisheries promotion, due to the fact that certain species of sea fish and sea shrimps spend their larval stages in the brackish water coastal area. The coastal area offers opportunities for intensifying beekeeping, is particularly rich in birdlife and may develop nature tourism, cultural-historical tourism and open-air recreation activities in the country.
