Abstract
This Decision establishes the Management Area of Noord Saramacca, with the aim of conserving the region's natural resources, especially its mangrove forests and coastal ecosystems, while promoting sustainable use of natural resources. The Decision defines the boundaries of the management area, highlights the importance of the management area for: increasing biodiversity, improving fish breeding, creating a breeding area for seabirds and feeding ground for migratory birds; improving rice cultivation and beekeeping. The Decision specifies environmental threats and challenges affecting the area, including: pollution risks from agricultural pesticides and organic waste; disruption of freshwater flows due to water abstraction and land reclamation; degradation of the mangroves and wetlands.
