Abstract
This Ministerial Decision establishes the Bigi Pan special management area, between Burnside and the mouth of the Corantijn River, as indicated in the annex and accompanying map, and empowers the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy to manage the area. The main purpose of this Decision is the conservation of natural resources, especially its mangrove forests and coastal ecosystems, birdlife and migratory birds, beekeeping and the marine fisheries. The Decision identifies the following environmental threats and challenges affecting the area, including: illegal land reclamation, freshwater abstraction (leading to salinisation), and pesticide misuse.
