Abstract
This Act provides for access to information held by public bodies (defined by this Act) in South Sudan. The purpose of this Act is to: a) give effect to the constitutional right of access to information; b) promote maximum disclosure of information in the public interest; c) establish effective mechanisms to secure that right; and d) provide for incidental matters. The Right of Access to information held by a private body where this is necessary for the exercise or protection of any right shall be subject only to limited and specific exceptions as set out in this Act. The Act lays down the rules for the request for information and the communication of such information and requires a public body to annually publish and disseminate key information about the public body in an accessible form. The President shall nominate a nominate an Information Commissioner, the powers and duties of which are defined by this Act. Release of information regarding public health or the environment may be exempt from certain requirements formulated by this Act.
