Abstract
This Act, comprising 59 Articles divided into VIII Chapters and three Schedules, aims to (i) provide for the application in South Sudan of International Units of Measurement (SI) specified in the first Schedule; (ii) set out the units of measurement; (iii) define weights and measures for use in trade. It establishes in Chapter VI that the National Bureau of Standards as the authority responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Act and the custody and maintenance of the standards of measurement. The Act specifies the primary (art.13), secondary (art.15) and working standards (art.17) of measurement and the procedures for their verification, authentication and maintenance. It also regulates the use, manufacture, import, sale and verification of weights, measures and weighing and measuring instruments for trade and prohibits the use of unauthorized, false or unjust ones (Chapter IV), and prescribes the offences and penalties for contravening the provisions of the Act and empowers the inspectors for its enforcement.
