Abstract
This Protocol establishes the framework for EU fishing activities in São Toméan waters following the expiration of the previous protocol in December 2024. The objective of this Protocol is to implement the provisions of the Agreement by specifying in particular the conditions governing access by Union vessels to São Tomé and Príncipe's fishing zone, and the provisions regarding the sustainable fisheries partnership. The duration of the Protocol is 4 years, covering the period from 2025 to 2029. The access to São Tomé and Príncipe's fishing zone shall be limited to 26 tuna seiners and 9 surface longliners.
The Protocol focuses on: conservation of highly migratory species (e.g., tuna, swordfish, oceanic whitetip shark) while ensuring sustainable exploitation of resources; compliance with all recommendations and resolutions of ICCAT; sustainable development and sound management of natural resources; ratification of ILO and IMO conventions applicable to fishers; and fishing authorisation issued under this Protocol for Union vessels to engage in fishing activities in São Tomé and Príncipe's fishing zone.
