Abstract
The aims of this Law are to establish the National Centre for Earthquakes and to define its functions and duties. The present Law is composed of 4 Chapters divided into 22 articles. Chapter 1 deals with terms and definitions. Chapter 2 defines the functions and duties of the Centre which are: (a) carrying out statistical and geological studies and research related to national and regional active earthquakes; (b) studying earthquake impact assessments; (c) developing plans to indicate the range and sphere of earthquakes in Syria and neighbourhood countries; (d) managing and developing earthquake monitoring centres and nets; (e) managing and putting into operation geophysical application systems related to earthquake monitoring; (f) creating an earthquake database; (g) developing plans to face emergencies; (h) educating the public on earthquake hazards; and (i) cooperating with local, Arab, regional and international organizations. Chapter 3 provides for the composition, management and duties of the Board and Director-General. Chapter 4 contains general provisions.
