Abstract
This Law consisting of 13 articles aims at giving a more detailed definition of the territorial waters of the Syrian Arab Republic, so that the outer limit of the territorial sea is the line at which every point on it from the closest point on the baseline is equal to the width of the territorial sea. It also establishes, among others, (i) that the passage of a foreign ship through the territorial sea does not have to violate the principles and rules of international law; (ii) includes among the ships of a dangerous nature any ships that is powered by nuclear energy, carries materials that are dangerous to the environment or affect national security; (iii) states that foreign vessels exercising the right of passage in the territorial sea must abide provisions pertaining cable protection, pipelines, conservation of living resources, fisheries, marine scientific research and pollution control; (iv) extends the definition of the continental shelf up to 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured; and (v) tightens the penalties for those who violate the provisions of this Law.
