Abstract
The National Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality Tonga Policy and Strategic Plan of Action establishes a comprehensive national framework for the period of 2019–2025 to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment across all sectors of society through coordinated policy, legislative, and institutional measures. The Policy is aligned with the Tonga Strategic Development Framework (2015–2025) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5). It identifies key priority areas including strengthening the enabling environment for gender mainstreaming, promoting equality within families and communities, enhancing women’s access to economic opportunities and employment, increasing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making, and improving resilience to climate change and disasters. The policy further addresses persistent structural challenges such as limited institutional capacity, social barriers including gender-based violence, economic disparities, and underrepresentation of women in governance, while emphasizing inclusive approaches that consider vulnerable groups. Its overarching goal is to achieve equitable and inclusive development by ensuring that women and men have equal rights, opportunities, and benefits in all spheres of national life, in alignment with Tonga’s national development priorities and international commitments.
