Abstract
The National Social Mitigation Plan lays down actions to mitigate the effects of the economic downturn on vulnerable citizens, which include the unemployed, underemployed, persons living in poverty and indigence, some single parent families, persons with disabilities, small businesses, recently retrenched workers and older persons in Trinidad and Tobago. The timeframe of this policy is 5 years covering the period between 2017 and 2022. This Plan focuses on three main objectives: (I) strengthening the social protection system, (II) promoting community and civil society action, and (III) enhancing productivity and innovation within both the private and public sectors.
Support will be provided to civil society organizations offering food assistance to vulnerable groups and to civil society organizations offering food assistance to ensure personal food security. A country-wide campaign that features information and training on home gardening, food production, animal husbandry, and aquaponics will be launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries to build resilience and empower citizens to grow their own food, reduce their food expenditure and/or supplement their income.
