Abstract
The Upstream Effluent Management Policy is a national policy with a cross-sectoral approach. This policy aims at achieving more sustainable upstream effluent management practices by strengthening national enforcement mechanisms as well as the regulatory and legislative mechanisms, in order to ensure that there is a sustainable balance between the development of the oil and gas sector and the protection and rational use of the environment. This Policy lays down strategies with a focus on effluents created as a result of oil and gas operations including produced water (PW), drilling fluids (DF), workover fluids (WF), completion fluids (CF), and hydrotest water (HTW).
