Abstract
The Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) of Tuvalu is a national policy with a multi-sectoral approach. The objective of this policy is to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the electricity generation and energy sectors by 2025 in compliance with the objective of the UNFCCC.
In order to combat the adverse impacts of climate change, the resilience of Tuvalu will be increased collectively by the people of Tuvalu. Regional and global cooperation will be strengthened to ensure climate change adaptation and mitigation and sustainable development. A low carbon economy will be developed by transforming the energy sector from non‐carbon sources to greater use of renewables such as solar and wind and use of transformational technology. Electricity will be generated using renewable energy in all the nine islands of Tuvalu to achieve zero emissions by 2025. Furthermore, total emissions of greenhouse gases from the entire energy sector will be reduced to 60% below 2010 levels by 2025. Due to the higher power demand per capita of Funafuti than the outer islands, energy efficiency programmes will be initially carried out in Funafuti, including public education, energy audits and technology improvements. In addition to that, other projects will be conducted aiming at providing additional energy generation from solar- and wind‐power systems. Legislative framework will be strengthened to promote energy efficiency, and control the importation, use and sale of inefficient electrical appliances into the country as part of Tuvalu’s obligations under the UNFCCC and related conventions. GHGs emissions will be further reduced from the other key sectors, such as agriculture and waste, conditional upon the necessary technology and finance.
