Abstract
The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is a national cross-sectoral strategic document of Tuvalu covering the period 2012-2016. Its main goal is to conserve biological diversity of Tuvalu.
The document provides for a set of more specific objectives, including in the area of food security. Namely, it aims at reviving the production and consumption of local food by fostering and promoting traditional agriculture and agroforestry, as well as by increasing awareness and understanding of the people on the linkages between food security and biodiversity.
Its other objectives, in the area of environment, include: to prevent air, land and marine pollution; to control and eliminate invasive species; to rehabilitate and restore degraded ecosystems; to promote and strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity; to recognize, protect and apply traditional knowledge, innovations and best practices in relation to the management, protection and utilization of biological resources; to protect wildlife; and to protect seabed and control overharvesting in high seas and territorial waters. Further, it also aims to increase the use of traditional knowledge and practices in the conservation and management of biodiversity as well as the equitable sharing of benefits by fostering and promoting the use of traditional knowledge and cultural practices; and fostering and promoting the equitable sharing of benefits derived from biodiversity.
In the area of climate change and disaster preparedness, the document provides for building resilience of biodiversity to manage, control and reduce the risks and impacts of climate change and natural disasters including by improving knowledge on the impact of climate change and natural disasters on biodiversity; ensuring meteorology and climate change information systems are relevant to biodiversity protection and conservation; developing contingency plans to ensure biodiversity, culture and traditions of Tuvalu are preserved and protected in time of extreme events of climate change and natural disasters
Government of Tuvalu will lead in the overall implementation process of the strategic document. According to the document, its logframe must be constructed jointly by key stakeholders as and where necessary immediately after the approval of the Tuvalu NBSAP. This is the logframe at the national level and since each island will have its own biodiversity plan, thus each island will construct an island logframe.
