Abstract
The Food and Nutrition Policy is a national policy with a cross-sectoral approach. The goals of the Policy are to eliminate malnutrition, to improve the nutritional status of the Tanzanian community, particularly of women and children, and to ensure food security.
This Policy stresses on food crop production, food harvesting and preservation, food processing and preparation, food availability, distribution and consumption, and food quality and adequacy, in order to ensure food security for all with special emphasis on young children, pregnant and lactating women, elderly and sick people. Better care for children and pregnant and lactating women will be strengthened by meeting their nutrient requirements and clean water needs. Water infrastructure will be improved to provide clean and safe water to all. Nutritional well-being will be improved through provision of adequate and nutritious food at all times as well as of social services in the fields of education, health, water, environmental sanitation, shelter and clothing. Health services will be improved to control diseases caused by malnutrition as well as by poor environmental sanitation. As a long-term strategy for awareness-raising, food and nutrition will be integrated into the education system at all levels. In order to ensure food availability at all times, trade systems, food prices and income levels will be integrated. Measures will be taken in food processing, distribution, storage and transportation stages to preserve nutritive value of food crops. Food waste will be prevented through capacity building in food harvesting and preservation. For more efficient management of food and nutrition security, the National Food and Nutrition Expert Committee and the Primary Health Care Committee for Regions, Districts, Wards and Villages will be established.
Women participation will be encouraged in decision-making processes related to resource allocation and utilization at all levels.
Food quality control will be strengthened on domestically produced and imported food products to safeguard public health. Domestic crop production will be increased to reduce import dependency on food. Crop production intensification will be enhanced by improving irrigation systems, providing financial support to farmers and producers, disseminating technologies in villages, training farmers and by conducting research. Moreover the use of fertilizers and pesticides will be controlled in line with the food safety requirements.
Disaster risk management will be improved in the field of crop production.
The monitoring of the implementation of this Policy will be carried out by all relevant Ministries, government agencies, committees in cooperation with the Tanzanian community.
