National Anti-poaching Strategy 2023-2033.

The overarching goal of this National Anti-Poaching Strategy (NAPS) 2023-2033 of Tanzania is to sustain wildlife for future generations, providing essential ecosystem goods and services while promoting socio-economic development. The Strategy emphasizes the country's commitment to sustainable wildlife management, which is crucial for economic development and the well-being of its citizens. Wildlife-based tourism significantly contributes to the nation's economy, accounting for over 17% of GDP, 25% of foreign earnings, and providing 1.6 million direct and indirect jobs. However, the government recognizes that poaching and illegal wildlife trade pose serious threats to wildlife survival and natural capital. The NAPS has been developed in alignment with global, regional, and national frameworks to intensify efforts against poaching and wildlife-related crimes. The Strategic Objectives are set up: 1. Enforce Laws and Agreements: Build capacity for national law enforcement agencies and implement multilateral agreements like CITES. 2. International Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships with global agencies, transit countries, and consumer states to disrupt wildlife trafficking networks. 3. Reduce Demand in Consumer States: Work with destination markets to raise awareness, reduce demand, and promote responsible behavior. 4. Advocacy and Awareness: Increase public knowledge about the value of wildlife and the devastating impacts of poaching. 5. Research and Innovation: Invest in studies and technological solutions, such as artificial intelligence, to monitor wildlife crimes and improve conservation practices. 6. Community Engagement: Empower local communities with sustainable livelihoods to reduce reliance on poaching. The NAPS also identifies five levels of poaching networks, from local poachers to international criminal syndicates, and outlines targeted actions for each.
