National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan 2023 – 2031.

This Tanzania National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan (2023–2031) outlines a comprehensive framework for utilizing bamboo as a renewable resource to support sustainable development, economic growth, and environmental conservation. The Strategy focuses on developing Tanzania's bamboo sector to contribute to job creation, income generation, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation. The Vision is: Ensured coordinated development of bamboo subsector for significant contribution in to socio-economic development and environmental conservation. The Mission is: Effectively manage and enhance utilization of bamboo resources for sustainable supply of bamboo products and environmental services to meet national and global needs.
The Objectives include: i. Enhanced sustainable bamboo production and utilization; ii. Increased markets niches for sustainable bamboo products and services; iii. Promoted research and innovations on bamboos value chains; iv. Enhanced human and institutional operational capacities and coordination; v. Enhanced sustainable investment and financing for bamboo value chains development; vi. Promoted good governance, reduction in HIV/AIDS and gender mainstreaming in bamboo sub-sector.
The Strategic Focus Areas proposed in the document include: 1.Bamboo Cultivation and Management: Expand bamboo plantations, targeting degraded lands and promoting sustainable management practices; Support smallholder farmers with seedlings, technical training, and financial resources. 2. Value Addition and Industrial Development: Establish processing facilities for high-value bamboo products; Promote export-oriented bamboo industries to increase foreign exchange earnings. 3. Market Development and Trade: Develop domestic and international markets for Tanzanian bamboo products; Facilitate access to finance and investment for bamboo entrepreneurs. 4. Environmental Conservation and Climate Resilience: Use bamboo for watershed management, land rehabilitation, and combating desertification; Promote bamboo as an alternative to unsustainable timber harvesting.
