Abstract
This Act provides for the establishment of the National Environment Management Council, its functions and for other related matters incident to its establishment. "Environment" is defined as land, water and atmosphere of the earth. The functions of the Council are spelled out in article 4 and they include the formulation of policies on environmental management, coordination of activities, evaluating pollution control policies and activities of the Government, proposing legislation, promoting educational programmes, etc. The Council shall be headed by a Director-General. The Act also contains financial and administrative provisions and the schedule sets out the composition of the Council.
