Abstract
This National Strategy for prevention and control of Brucellosis in humans and animals is a nationwide sub-sectoral document aiming at controlling and eventually eradicating brucellosis in the country through an integrated intervention strategy to reduce the burden and socio-economic impact caused by this infectious zoonosis in the human and animal populations and thus ensure the wellbeing of people by improving the safety of animal source products and livestock production. Key strategic objectives for Brucellosis control are (i) enhance awareness and knowledge on brucellosis for professionals, policymakers, community, and the general public; (ii) initiate a national vaccination program for livestock using public-private partnership; (iii) streamline and harmonize appropriate legal/policy framework, institutional arrangement, and resources for supporting the implementation of the Plan; (iv) institutionalize Brucellosis testing in public and private health facilities; (v) support the implementation of surveillance and diagnostic activities using the One Health Approach; (vi) promote and coordinate research and innovation in Brucellosis interventions; (vii) facilitate and support the application of bio-security and bio-safety targeting risk groups. The primary interventions to reduce/eradicate Brucellosis in the country shall be (i) elimination of contact between people and infected animals or their products and avoidance of behavioral risk practice; (ii) promotion of personal hygiene, protection of the environment, and food hygiene; (iii) prevention and control of brucellosis in food animals; (iv) strengthened institutional capacity; (v) promotion and coordination of research and innovation in brucellosis interventions; (vi) raised awareness in the various stakeholders (livestock keepers, consumers, policymakers).
