Abstract
This Act establishes the National Radiation Commission, the Radiation Protection Advisory Committee and the National Radiation Protection Fund and makes provision for the control of use of radioactive material and the protection from radiation in general.
Where the President considers that the national interest requires that it is necessary for more effective development of nuclear energy in Tanzania, he or she may declare the Commission to be a public corporation. The Commission shall be responsible for all matters relating to control on the use of atomic Commission energy and other radioactive materials and substances and advise the government and formulate policies in this respect.
The Act prescribes various requirements of registration, licensing and qualification of persons dealing with radioactive materials. Disposal of radioactive waste requires an authorization of the Commission with the consent of the Minister.
The Radiation Protection Advisory Committee shall be the principal advisory and executive organ of the Commission for ensuring the establishment, maintenance and operation of a radiation protection service in Tanzania. The National Radiation Protection Fund shall be applied for meeting the expenses of the Secretariat of the Commission and for the purposes for which the Commission is established by this Act.
