Tanzania Elephant Management and Action Plan 2023-2033.

This Tanzania Elephant Management and Action Plan (TEMP) 2023-2033 provides a ten-year framework for the conservation and management of African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana). The Plan builds on Tanzania's conservation successes and addresses ongoing challenges, including poaching, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflicts.
The vision is: To ensure elephant conservation in Tanzania by securing and (where appropriate) restoring populations and their habitats, and promoting coexistence for the benefit of present and future generations. Based on the vison, three targets are set up: 1. To maintain viable habitats and populations of elephants in Tanzania through adaptive management; 2. To ensure elephant populations do not negatively impact community livelihood goals and biodiversity conservation goals; and 3. To involve all sectors in the realisation of the full economic potential of elephants and other wildlife resources outside the protected areas through sustainable utilisation. Key Actions and Strategies include: 1. Enhancing Law Enforcement: Strengthen the National Taskforce on Anti-Poaching (NTAP) and deploy Rapid Response Teams; Increase collaboration with regional and international bodies like INTERPOL and CITES. 2. Managing Human-Elephant Conflicts: Implement strategies to mitigate human-elephant conflicts, such as compensation schemes and protective measures for crops and livestock; Promote coexistence through community education and awareness campaigns. 3. Securing Habitat Connectivity: Protect and restore wildlife corridors, buffer zones, and dispersal areas; Develop sustainable land-use plans that align with conservation goals. 4. Research and Monitoring: Conduct regular aerial surveys and studies to assess elephant populations and habitat health; Establish disease surveillance systems for early detection and management. 5. Engaging Communities: Share conservation revenues with local communities to build support for wildlife protection; Promote legal wildlife utilization to discourage poaching.
