Abstract
These Regulations, comprising 12 articles, govern the fortification of food to prevent or address micronutrient deficiencies in the population. Article 4 prohibits the manufacture, import, or sale of unfortified food unless it meets the minimum fortification requirements specified in the First Schedule or the applicable national standard. However, in cases of emergency or food shortages, the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) may grant permits for the importation, manufacture, or distribution of unfortified food. Fortificants must comply with national and/or international standards, and manufacturers of fortified food must establish, maintain, and routinely follow safety and quality assurance procedures throughout the production process. Additionally, fortified food must adhere to labeling requirements, including: (i) the word "fortified" appearing immediately before or after the common name of the food; (ii) the specific name and amount of each added micronutrient, expressed in milligrams per kilogram for solids or milligrams per liter for liquids; and (iii) the prescribed food fortification logo, as detailed in the Third Schedule of these Regulations, which may only be used for food licensed by the Authority as fortified.
