Wildlife Policy Implementation Strategy 2023-2033.

This Wildlife Policy Implementation Strategy (WPIS) 2023–2033 is Tanzania's roadmap for effectively implementing its Wildlife Policy of 2007. It addresses past gaps in wildlife management, sets a framework for coordinated action, and promotes sustainable biodiversity conservation. This Strategy aligns with global frameworks such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), CITES, and other multilateral agreements, while incorporating national goals like Tanzania's Vision 2025.
The Vision of the WPIS is set up as: Sustainable conservation of wildlife and wetlands resources. The WPIS focuses on seven thematic areas: 1. Protection and Conservation of wildlife and wetlands. 2. Sustainable Utilization of resources to enhance socio-economic benefits. 3. Management and Development of wildlife and wetlands resources. 4. Strengthen Research and Monitoring to guide evidence-based decisions. 5. Enhance Communication, Education, and Awareness for public support. 6. Policy Implementation Coordination across sectors and stakeholders. 7. Regional and International Cooperation for shared conservation efforts. Strategic Approaches include: 1. Strengthening Conservation Policies: Update and harmonize existing legal frameworks for wildlife and wetland management. 2. Promoting Community-Based Conservation: Expand WMAs and empower communities to benefit economically from wildlife tourism. 3. Enhancing Law Enforcement: Strengthen anti-poaching measures, deploy advanced technology, and increase penalties for wildlife crimes. 4. Improving Human-Wildlife Coexistence: Develop compensation schemes and preventive measures for human-wildlife coexistence. 5. Capacity Building: Train professionals in wildlife management and ensure adequate staffing for agencies like TANAPA and TAWA. 6. Data-Driven Conservation: Invest in research and monitoring to guide decision-making and assess policy impacts.
