Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Hungary on issues of water management in the border waters.

The Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Hungary, considering to resolve the issue of water management in frontier waters in the spirit of good neighborliness, cooperation and mutual benefit, decided to conclude a valid Agreement and have agreed on the following: (a) construction of new, reconstruction and operation of existing bridge, flood control and other hydraulic structures, as well as pumping stations for pumping out internal drainless waters; (b) construction of water intake structures and releases of all types of waste water on new ones, as well as reconstructed and operating ameliorative systems; (c) protection from pollution and control of water quality; (d) protection from flooding by flood and internal drainless waters, as well as from the harmful effects of ice phenomena; and (e) protection against fish and its juveniles entering water intakes. The Contracting Parties undertake that their respective authorities will: (a) maintain frontier waters, installations on them and flood control facilities on its territory in such a way that the other Contracting Party is not harmed or the water management conditions are not worsened; (b) agree on plans for water management activities in frontier waters and assist each other in the implementation of these plans in accordance with Article 8 of this Agreement; and (c) exchange information and consult each other on the possible impact of implemented and planned water management measures on the regime of boundary waters in the Tisza river basin. The Parties shall systematically monitor water quality through general sampling, analysis and overall assessment.
